Israeli films have really stepped to the forefront of the foreign language picture category over the past couple of years. Film after film has been paid attention to and rewarded with critical praise and awards/nominations. For example, director Joseph Cedar’s film Footnote was nominated for Best Foreign Language Picture at the last Oscars. As a country Israel is on a film roll.
Though there are not tons of films in the festival it still features an impressive variety of subjects and styles. The films are not also the best from 2011, but also 2010 and 2009. An indication of the high quality and calibre of the festival is the fact that Cedar’s Footnote is one of the nine films being presented this year. Another of the films being presented is The Flood and the director Guy Nattiv will be on hand at the two screenings of it. Some films are already sold out, so make sure you get in there early!
The entire festival is being screened at two theatres in two different parts of the city. Right downtown is the AMC Forum and St. Laurent is the Guzzo Spheretech. Both very accessible and both high quality theatres, so you will be seeing the films in the best possible setting.
