Though they are thought to be a Canadian rock band, Big Wreck was actually formed and is based in Boston. The band members were all attending Berklee College of Music. They got together in 1994 and broke up (as rock bands often do) in 2002 and then recently got back together (as rock bands often do).
Despite the fact that they are an American band the band’s biggest success was here in Canada. Maybe because lead singer Ian Thornley is a Canadian. Whatever the reason their first album, In Loving Memory Of, released in 1997 had three charting singles, “The Oaf”, “That Song”, “Blown Wide Open”, in Canada while only one made it to the American charts. The follow up album, The Pleasure and the Greed, was released and it was not a commercial success on either side of the border. They broke up soon afterwards and Thornley returned to Canada. He formed a new band called Thornley.
Despite their short career and only releasing two albums other artists like David Cook and Submersed list Big Wreck as an influence.
After Thornley and former bandmate Brian Doherty played a few shows together they decided to revive Big Wreck. After releasing a single, “Albatross”, at the end of 2011, Big Wreck released in early 2012 an album of the same name.
