The opera by Gounod features a familiar storyline. An older man falls in love with a young a beautiful young woman. He is desperate for her to love him, but the age difference makes it impossible. Literally willing to go to any lengths to win the affection of Marguerite (soprano Mary Dunleavy) Doctor Faust (tenor Guy Belanger) makes a deal with Méphistophélès that involves Faust and Marguerite’s souls becoming the property of Méphistophélès in return for Faust becoming a young man.
Besides the wonderful and famous music by Gounod, Faust features the interesting father-son combination of Guy Belanger player the older Faust and Antoine Belanger playing the younger. Also warranting our close attention is the American soprano Mary Dunleavy in the role of Marguerite, who has made a name for herself on American stages.
The opera, sung in English and French with subtitles, is directed by Alain Gauthier, sets by Olivier Landreville and the orchestra conductor is Emmanuel Plasson.
