In a turning of the tables in this animated feature Superman (voiced by George Newbern) is the one who needs to be saved. The savers are a group of superheroes called The Elite.
In the beginning Superman believes he can work with the foursome in the battle against criminals but it soon becomes clear that it is not going to be possible. They soon become rivals.
The Elite are a new breed of superhero who are a show no mercy group. Instead of capturing their foes they render the ultimate judgement – death. They see Superman as too idealistic. Superman begins to wonder if the world has passed him by and if his brand of crime fighting is out of style. The clash of the two sides culminates with a battle on one of the moons of Jupiter.
Though this is based on the Marvel Comics characters it astounded me how low quality the animation was. It is almost like cartoons from the 1950s. What saves the entire thing is the high level of the voice work and the interesting storyline. The idea of what modern society sees as justice is examined. A timely theme.
