Festival du Nouveau Cinema 2012 Preview

Now firmly in its 40s, Festival du Nouveau Cinema is on the brink of its 41st edition. The dates this year are October 10 until 21. FNC is home to all kinds of cinema – world, experimental, short, drama, documentary, animation – you name it they got it. Their arms and minds are wide open to all ideas and formats.  You can tell from just a superficial glance that the people behind this particular festival are very passionate about what they do and film in general.

This year there will be a whopping over 300 films screened.  Many should be classified under the “can’t miss” section.  The opening film is a Canadian film called La Mise a L’Aveugle by Simon Galiero.  It is a tale of a woman feeling trapped in her life and finding a fresh start in her hometown.  The closing film is Camille Redouble by Noémie Lvovsky.  A selection of the other anticipated films include: A Liar’s Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman, Life of Pi by Ang Lee, Midnight’s Children by Deepa Mehta, Boredom by Albert Nerenberg, Stories We Tell by Sarah Polley, and Antiviral by Brandon Cronenberg.

The eleven day festival is not only a place to watch films, but also to come discuss and learn about things film related.  Learning is not only something they encourage, it is also something that the festival itself has undergone over the years.  It has grown and changed as the times have.  Video, video on demand and 3D have become more and more important within the film industry.  As such FNC has hosted workshops and discussion on these topics as well as incorporating that in their programming.
