Rufus Wainwright Comes Home

Born in 1973 in the United States, Rufus is the son of musicians Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III and older brother of singer/songwriter Martha Wainwright. His parents divorced when Rufus was only 3 years old and he and his mother moved to Montreal. Rufus spent most of his childhood years in this fair city.

It is not surprising that he started playing piano at the age of 6 and began touring with the McGarrigle Sisters and Family (Kate, her sister Anna, Rufus, and his sister Martha) at the age of 13. The folk group played several shows together.

Later on Rufus began to play weekly shows at Café Sarajevo in Montreal. He finally signed a record deal with DreamWorks and moved to New York in 1996. After a bout with addiction to crystal meth around the turn of the 21st century, he rebounded and began recording a series of critically acclaimed albums.

Following his 2008 tour Rufus ambitiously began writing an opera, a musical genre he had been a fan of for a long time. Reviews of the opera, “Prima Donna”, were mixed, but he showed much aptitude for the genre.
