Hear ye! Hear ye! I declare the 4th edition of the Montreal Greek Film Festival open. The festival provides a venue for Greek filmmakers from the world round to screen their films. Organized by Avra Georgiou and her team in association with the locally based Film Transit International. Films of all sorts are presented. Drama, humour and documentaries bring to light many of the intricacies and nuances of Greek culture. Special theme nights involve tributes to the grand dames of Greek cinema – Maria Callas, Melina Merkouri and Irene Papas – as well as one highlighting the up and coming young talent in Greek cinema are sure to be highlights.
Besides the obvious film component of the festival there is a focused effort by the organizers to educate those inside and outside the community about the Greek culture. With that end in mind there are several events around the screenings. On the opening evening there will be a gala featuring members of the media like Mose Persico and Aphrodite Salas. During the festival there will be an evening sponsored by Pontos (October 30) and after the screening there will be a wine tasting and finger food (provided by Pontos) event. On November 1 there is an evening that features a lecture and discussion lead by different Hellenic Associations. Bookending the entire festival is the closing night which will feature a screening of Mediterrano followed by a party (more wine and finger food) with music that I’m sure will be tons of fun.
