This year’s 4th Annual Montreal Greek Film Festival opening gala was MCed by CTV’s Aphrodite Salas and Mose Persico. Aphrodite introduced the event by stating that as Greece continues to be in world headlines, this festival is an opportunity to showcase Greece at its best. The lively CTV duo had the audience completely engaged especially since this year’s festival theme is rooted in the cultural affinities shared by both Italian and Greek communities.
To embrace this cultural theme, a live concert took place with singing sensation Nitsa Melas, who was accompanied by the Italian band “The Grand Band Show”. Not only that, but much to the delight of a couple in the audience, Nitsa sang as a special request for the couple’s wedding anniversary, “Stand by Me”. Considering that this global musical artist has won the title of “World Music Artist of the Year” at the Los Angeles Music Awards, this was definitely a treat. Nitsa has worked with Cirque de Soleil’s on their first ever musical event Delirium and has collaborated with magician performer Criss Angel at the Vegas hotel show Believe. After the concert came to a close, Persico entertained the audience by saying this is what happens when you put Greeks and Italians together, you get a double whammy combination that resembles something in between Frankie Valli and Adele. No doubt, the music talent of the evening had everyone off their seats. Especially Nitsa Melas who was invited back this year for an encore performance after closing the 3rd Montreal Greek Film Festival in 2011.
For those of you that missed out on Opening Night’s successful gala, tickets are still available for the Greek Film Festival’s closing evening which will be held at the Rialto Theatre. The evening will showcase Oscar winning film Mediterraneo which received an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, an Italian production shot in the beautiful landscape of Greece.
