Kiss (Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer) has become associated with the American hard rock lifestyle. They are twenty albums into their lengthy career and are still singing songs primarily about women and that envious sounding rock ‘n roll lifestyle. Against my better judgment I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the album. The band is still churning out quality rock music. Sometimes all that glitz, glam and makeup overshadow the fact that they are talented musically. Thematically Monster is an ode to the type of music that prompted the members of Kiss to want to play music way back over 40 years ago. Despite the fact that it is a nod to the past in rock music Monster still sounds new and fresh. There are no gimmicks just straight forward rock songs. The singing is decent but what really caught my ears was the guitar work. Thayer really takes centre stage and plays the crap out of several of the tracks.
