Originally from Halifax and now based in Toronto, rock quartet (Chris Murphy – vocals/bass, Patrick Pentland – guitar, Jay Ferguson – guitar, Andrew Scott – drums) Sloan have been together for a long time. In 1991 they got together while at college and in 1992 they established their own record label.
Sloan writes all their own music. At their live shows depending who wrote what they have a habit of switching the instruments they play. Demonstrates that they are very competent musicians and very loosey-goosey on stage.
Smeared was their first full-length album to be released. It was followed two years later in 1994 by Twice Removed. This was a seminal album for the band. In a poll in 1996 and 2000 it was ranked as one of the best Canadian albums ever released. It garnished this attention despite the fact that Geffen did not promote it.
After a hiatus they released another great album in 1996 entitled One Chord to Another. By 2003 the band, which had already earned plenty of success in their home country, decided to try and breakthrough in the United States. As a result their next couple of albums were more radio friendly and heavily produced.
The band’s 10th and latest album, The Double Cross, was released in 2011 and they have embarked on a tour to support it and to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their first gig.
