Novelist and screenwriter Hank (played by David Duchovny) is the type of bad guy that women eat up with a spoon. He sleeps around, gets high often, drinks too much, is sarcastic all the time, impulsive, and takes very little seriously. But he is also handsome, witty and intelligent. Though down deep he is a good guy Hank keeps messing things up.  Who has to pay for all his nonsense is his teenage daughter Becca (played by Madeleine Martin) and his baby momma and love of his life, Karen (played by Natascha McElhone). When will he learn that he cannot get through life on charm alone?

Episode 1: JFK to LAX: Hank left Los Angeles a few years ago to return to New York City. He does return to Los Angeles suddenly after an ugly break up with his latest girlfriend, Carrie (played by Natalie Zea) and stays with his agent and best friend, Charlie (played by Evan Handler).

Episode 2: The Way of the Fist: Hank does not want to write the screenplay for “Santa Monica Cop” and turns down rapper Samurai Apocalypse (played by RZA). Charlie, Marcy (played by Pamela Adlon) and Stuart (played by Stephen Tobolowsky) are having trouble keeping a nanny for little Stuart.

Episode 3: Boys + Girls: Hank gives his finished version of the screenplay for “Santa Monica Cop” to Samurai Apocalypse. Hank wants to leave L.A. but finds himself stuck there after Tyler (played by Scott Michael Foster) stays with Karen and Becca after being beaten up by Samurai’s boys outside a club.

Episode 4: Waiting for the Miracle: Carrie shows up in Los Angeles much to Hank’s surprise. Karen invites Carrie and Hank to a dinner party at her and Richard’s (played by Jason Beghe).

Episode 5: The Ride Along: Samurai, Charlie and Hank go on a ride along with the Santa Monica Police Department for a night. Hank is called to a Venice restaurant when Richard begins drinking again and is acting out of control.

Episode 6: Love Song: Samurai asks for Hank’s help to get Kali (played by Meagan Good) through a songwriting block. Karen ends up at Hank’s door saying that she feels she might have made a mistake marrying Richard.

Episode 7: Here I Go Again: Hank covers for Richard’s drunken night with a stripper named Holly (played by Drea de Matteo). Becca is upset when she finds out that Tyler has been unfaithful.

Episode 8: Raw: Hank reads Tyler’s screenplay and is upset that it is autobiographical plus quite sexual. Charlie and Lizzie’s (played by Camila Luddington) seems to continuously intersect with Marcy and Stuart’s.

Episode 9: At the Movies: Filming begins on “Santa Monica Cop” and Stuart is the producer. Hank’s “involvement” with the film’s leading lady causes plenty of tension on set.

Episode 11: The Party: Hank is finally going to return to New York. Before he leaves Charlie throws him a surprise going away party that gets pretty crazy.

Episode 12: Hell Ain’t a Bad Place to Be: Richard makes a surprising announcement to Karen and Hank. Hank’s ex-girlfriend Carrie shows up again and this time she is a woman with a plan.
