Filmed right here in Montreal, “The Words” tells the story of a struggling writer who has spent an endless amount of time trying to get representation for his manuscripts but keeps getting rejected. A twist of fate changes everything and gives him an opportunity of a lifetime.
Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper) spends much of his time writing, with the hopes of getting published. A golden opportunity presents itself when his wife Dora (Zoe Saldana) buys him a briefcase from an antique shop. Inside, he happens to discover an old manuscript. With no name or any contact info listed, Rory reluctantly presents the manuscript as his work and finally gets the recognition he had been hoping for. While success is bitter-sweet, he continues to get much praise and awards for the published book. The past, however, comes back to haunt him when the actual writer of the manuscript tracks him down and Rory realizes the heavy price he has to pay for the decision he made.
Directors and childhood friends Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal’s script was workshopped at the Sundance film lab and was the closing film at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. They did a remarkable job with this movie. The script was engaging, and well directed. Actors Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Dennis Quaid, Olivia Wilde and Jeremy Irons gave good performances as well. The film was also notable for presenting the realities of what artists go through and the challenge.
