When you have been working in a group with a large personality like Andre 3000 it stands to reason that you have been operating in a rather large shadow. Now that he has released his second solo album he has stepped out into the sun on his own and done a rather good job of it. On Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumors he demonstrates that he is not the only member of Outkast with a left of centre taste in music. You’ll hear plenty of interesting synthesizer stuff going on, dreamy sounding female vocalists and even some indie rock influence. Now that I’ve said a mouthful I’m sure you are intrigued. It is not the usual hip hop/pop fare that you are getting with a Big Boi album. Big Boi definitely continues that funky sound that we became familiar with from Outkast but he takes the ball and runs with it…far. While the jams he constructs are funky there are some modern touches supplied by some spacey sounding synthesizers. He is not only trying out some new sounds in hip hop he is trying to create his own sound. There are also some interesting guest appearances (now that is pure hip hop) from the likes of B.o.B., Kid Cudi, Kelly Rowland, TI, Ludacris, and A$AP Rocky to check out.
