Nelly Furtado Brings her Spirit Indestructible Tour to St. Denis Theatre

Nelly Furtado has been around for 13 years.  The energetic young woman is now the mother of a 10-year-old.  Time passes quickly.  Her hit debut album Whoa, Nelly! was released in 2000 and her star rose quickly.  Singles “I’m Like a Bird”, “Turn Off the Radio” and “On the Radio (Remember the Days)” all did well on the Top 40 charts.  The album earned her 4 Grammy nominations in 2002 and “I’m Like a Bird” won for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

With high expectations and some instability going on with her label, Nelly Furtado’s sophomore album did not do as well.  Folklore contained the singles “Forca”, “Try” and “Powerless”.  Fans might have been a little disappointed with its less poppy sound.

The disappointment of her second album did not seem to affect Furtado all that much as she came back (after the birth of her daughter Nevis) with her third album, Loose.  It became her biggest selling album to date.  Singles off the album were “Maneater”, “Say it Right”, “Promiscuous”, and “All Good Things Come to an End”.

In between her third and fourth English albums Nelly Furtado worked with other artists like James Morrison, Justin Timberlake, Flo Rida, K’naan, the Game, and Divine Brown.  She also released a Spanish album, Mi Plan, and The Best of Nelly Furtado.

September 2012 Nelly Furtado released her anticipated fourth album, The Spirit Indestructible.  Songs on it can be classified as reggae, urban and alternative. Big name producers like The Neptunes, Tiesto, Timbaland, Rick Nowels, and Ryan Tedder worked on the album.

It has been hard over the course of Nelly Furtado’s career to pin down her sound.  She has released music that fits in the pop, dance, hip hop, and Spanish categories.  The mixing of genres and sounds has always been a part of her music.  Her influences hint to that diversity as she cites Ani DiFranco, Bjork, Jeff Buckley, De La Soul, TLC, Oasis, and Radiohead.
