In the south of France there are gipsy settlements scattered through the Arles and Montpelier areas. In these areas the traditional type of music played is called “rumba flamenca”. During the early 1980s a group of musically inclined friends created a band they called Gipsy Kings. Members of the band are exclusively from two families – the Reyes and Baliardo.
Right out of the gates the Gipsy Kings’ music connected with people all over the world. Their brand of pop flamenco music fit perfectly with social dances like samba and rumba. Mixing infectious vocals with their complex strumming and percussive tapping of the guitars their music enabled them to become worldwide stars who sold over 18 million albums. Songs like “Bamboleo”, “Djobi Djoba”, “Volare”, and their cover of the Eagles “Hotel California” went on to be big hits.
