Neo-soul has been a hot musical genre over the past couple of years. Erykah Badu, Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone, Raphael Saadiq, and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings have made soul music cool once again. Neo soul is close to R&B but just different enough in that it incorporates elements of hip hop, jazz, funk and African music. This soul revival bandwagon has been hopped upon by many an act. Several are just cashing in while others are true devotees of the genre. Fitz and the Tantrums’ sophomore album (though their first for Elektra Records) shows that they are a band that feel this brand of music deep in their soul. Even though they have changed things up a little these are twelve songs that have evolved from the Motown sound. You’ll hear tinges of electronica, hip hop and even 80s New Wave on the songs on More Than Just a Dream but its soul is still based in soul music. As a result of the expansion of their sound they are not easily pigeonholed. They are not simply a retro cover band, rather they are a talented band with a throwback sound. By all evidence that sound will keep evolving and incorporating different influences and we will gladly tag along for the ride.
