California’s Avenged Sevenfold have just released their sixth album. The metal band is trying to recreate the success they had with their 2010 album, Nightmare, which was number one on the Billboard Metal Album Chart in its debut week. That is a tall order but one they seem up to. It is also an important album in that it is the first for new member – drummer Arin Ilejay. Gone is the heavy metal sound they had at the beginning of their career and in enters a more crowd pleasing brand of hard rock. Despite the change in sound direction which might aggravate long-time fans even they will have to admit this is good stuff. It is the type of music à la Sabbath and Metallica that you’ll never get tired of listening to. If they were going for an album that is an ode to metal from the 1980s then they have accomplished what they were aiming for.
