Opera meets Bollywood. The music is a mix of exotic and energetic. As for the story it puts love and religion up front and center. In other words, all the elements to make this a must see opera.
It is the 19th century in India and Lakmé has fallen in love with Gérald, a British soldier. Of course, this is a forbidden love. Each is facing dilemmas. He is torn between duty and love and she between her ultra religious father and love. At a certain point it seems like poison is the only solution.
The opera was composed by Léo Delibes based upon a libretto by Edmond Gondinet and Philippe Gille which was based upon a novel by Pierre Lohti called Rarahu. It is told in three acts and is sung in French with English subtitles. This production was incredibly popular during its run here in the winter of 2007.
