Steve Aoki has become quite a force behind the scenes and the turntable in the electronic music arena. Besides being one of the more popular DJs he has also started his own label (Dim Mak Records) and as a producer has been nominated for a Grammy.
Born in Florida, Aoki grew up in California. His father was the founder of the famous Benihana restaurant chain. He went to university and got two degrees, in Feminist Studies and Sociology. It was at this time he began his career as a DJ and started his own label while still in his early 20s. The label, founded in 1996, has released music by the likes of MSTRKRFT and Felix Cartel.
In 2008 he released his debut remix album called Pillowface and his Airplane Chronicles. The follow up and his latest, Wonderland, was released last year and features vocals by Kid Cudi, LMFAO, will.i.am, Rivers Cuomo, and Lil John. He received a Grammy Award nomination for the album in the Best Dance Album category. Aoki has also worked with or collaborated with Duck Sauce, Afrojack and Tiesto. As far as remixing he has worked on songs by Drake, Eminem, Lil Wayne, All American Rejects, and The Killers.
The man tours relentlessly and has gained quite a following due to his shows. At a Steve Aoki show don’t be surprised if he crowd surfs, throws cake at the audience, sprays you with champagne, or rides a raft on the dance floor.
