Thrash metal is a sub set of heavy metal music and since 1981 Slayer have been important members of this musical family. Formed in Huntington Park, California, they are in their 4th decade together as a band. It is thought that the band has sold around 20 million albums over the course of their career. Of the 10 studio albums they have released 4 of them have been certified gold and they have earned 5 Grammy nominations.
The music of Slayer is not for the easily offended as subject matters such as Satanism, necrophilia, war, anti-religion, and serial killers have been broached in their songs. Not stopping there the artwork on their albums usually is graphic in nature. As a result of the controversial materials they have had albums banned and been targeted by religious groups. There is an aggressive nature to their music with many a song being played at breakneck speed. They are well known for the guitarwork of Kerry King and the recently deceased Jeff Hanneman. Within the thrash metal genre the band is thought of as one of the more influential. Metals bands like Slipknot, System of a Down, Cannibal Corpse, and Lamb of God have all listed Slayer as an influence.
