RIDM Pulls Up the Tent Stakes Until Next Year

tzvetanka5“Quebec’s only film festival dedicated to documentaries, the Montreal International Documentary Festival presents the best reality‐based films, including the works of established directors and new talents.”

The above quote tells you all you need to know about the Montreal International Documentary Festival.  It is the film festival in which reality is the bomb and offers it up in all its splendor for us to revel in.  We got the opportunity to take in films that explored amongst others the topics of the development of the highrise building, women’s roller derby, a son leaving his family because they do not accept that he is a homosexual, a Haitian voodoo priest in Poland, and Boris Karloff.  This year 135 films were screened while a variety of other events happened to round out attendees’ experience.

With the 16th edition of the festival wrapping up this past Sunday the awards were given out and here is a list of the prize winners:

GRAND PRIZE FOR BEST CANADIAN FEATURE

Dominic Gagnon for his film Hoax_Canular

A special mention was awarded to Night Labor by Ashley Sabin and David Redmon.

BEST NEW TALENT FROM QUEBEC/CANADA

Khoa Lê for the film Bà noî (Grandma)

 

BEST INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM

Da Vinci by Yuri Ancarani

The jury also awarded a special mention to A story for the Modlins by Sergio Oksman

 

BEST INTERNATIONAL MEDIUM-LENGTH FILM

A New Product by Harun Farocki

The Art of Disappearing by Bartek Konopka and Piotr Rosolowski received a special mention

PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD

The Square by Jehane Noujaim

 

MAGNUS ISACSSON AWARD

Mélanie Carrier and Olivier Higgins for Québékoisie

A special mention was awarded to À jamais, pour toujours d’Alexandra Sicotte-Lévesque

 

WOMEN INMATES’ JURY
