Serial killer Joe Carroll (played by James Purefoy) has escaped from death row. Carroll is a dangerous man who killed fourteen young women who were students at the Virginia college where he taught English Literature. Desperate, the FBI asks former agent Ryan Hardy (played by Kevin Bacon) to help them on the case. Hardy has secluded himself since working on the case involving the capture of Carroll in 2003. They have asked him because Hardy knows everything there is to know about Carroll and is probably the only one who is his intellectual equal. The problem is that Hardy is a shell of the man he used to be as he was injured both mentally and physically while working on the Carroll case. Hardy has not worked in the field in a long time. This opportunity offers him a chance at redemption.
