Jazz Meets Opera When OdM Takes on Porgy & Bess

Changing things up a little is definitely out of the realm of possibility for Opera de Montreal.  They prove this by presenting George Gershwin’s classic of the jazz era, Porgy & Bess.  Even if you are an opera fan you’ll certainly recognize and like one or more of the string of hit songs from Porgy & Bess.  They will perform such standards as “Summertime”, “My Man’s Gone Now” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So”.  Presented as part of the range of activities associated with Black History Month, the all-black cast is joined by the Montreal Jubilation Choir under the direction of Trevor Payne.

The story is set in South Carolina in a small fishing community.  Bess is trying to distance herself from her checkered past.  This is difficult due to the fact that her former lover and a total bully Crown is always lurking about casting doubt and fear upon her.  Porgy is crippled and head over heels in love with Bessy.  Can he save the woman he adores in this story of love and death.

Very few tickets remain for this opera despite the fact that an additional show has been added on.
