Most out there know the fairy tale by the Grimm brothers about young siblings Hansel and Gretel. Composed by Engelbert Humperdinck (no, not the British singer), he obviously saw the potential in the story that would lend itself to opera. From its debut in December of 1893 the opera has gained more and more fans of all ages every time it is performed.
Hansel (Emma Char) and Gretel (Frêdérique Drolet) are with their family picking strawberries in the woods. Not paying attention to where they are going the two get lost within the forest. While trying to find their way back home they come across some interesting and dangerous characters as well as a delectable looking gingerbread house.
This season is one of experimentation for the Opera de Montreal. They have taken on some non-typical operas. Hansel and Gretel would fall into the “different” category. This time they have collaborated with the National Theatre School of Canada as well as the National Circus School. Expect wonderful melodies, parts inspired by folk music and plenty of characters with “oomph” in this opera sung in German.
