In most instances when something is straight-to-video it comes with it a doubt that it can be any good. For the most part the Disney Tinker Bell videos are exceptions to that rule. While the viewer cannot expect the same overall quality of Disney feature length movie theatre releases the Fairy films are not an awful embarrassment.
One of the rare Tinker Bell films that happens outside of the fairy homestead of Pixie Hollow The Pirate Fairy has an almost mystical feeling to it. Fantasy and fairies abound. It is most certainly aimed at young girls but I can see some boys liking it as well due to the inclusion of the pirate angle.
This is a prequel in which several familiar Peter Pan characters are introduced. We come face-to-face for the first time with Captain Hook who we meet as a young cabin boy named James (voiced by Tom Hiddleston) and we also meet his sidekick Smee (voiced by Jeff Bennett).
I also applaud Disney for making a film (and this goes for the entire Tinker Bell series) that has a good feel to it plus the lessons or morals involved are worth your time. Plus characters that won’t be annoying to anyone over the age of eight.
Zarina (voiced by Christina Hendricks) is a dust keeper who has a little bit of an attitude. Her rebellious nature gets the best of her and she breaks the rules created by fairies about tinkering with the properties of fairy dust. When it is discovered what she is doing Zarina is relieved of her duties and given another task. Angry about what she sees as a demotion Zarina decides to leave Pixie Hollow and now finds herself living amongst the pirates.
One year has passed and Zarina comes back to Pixie Hollow but it is not with good intentions. After stealing the blue pixie dust she steals off with it. Tinker Bell (voiced by Mae Whitman) and some of her friends don’t fall victim to Zarina’s sleep spell and head off after her and the dust.
