M.I.A. On the Road Again

British rapper, singer/songwriter M.I.A. garnered worldwide recognition in 2008 with her song “Paper Planes” from the Oscar winning film “Slumdog Millionaire”, but she had been recording music for years previous. Her music features a myriad of styles including hip hop, electronica, dance, and world music. The music M.I.A. records does not follow any formula or pattern; it is eclectic to say the least.

Beginning in 2004 with the release of her first album, M.I.A. made her mark on the music world. Over the course of her career she has been nominated for two Grammy Awards, an Oscar Award and the prestigious Mercury Prize. Her most recent (2010) release “Maya” (her birth name) has been a Top 10 hit in many countries. In 2009, M.I.A. was named as part of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People. A number of her music peers consider her music to be quite influential and she is also thought of as a style icon.  Again changing things up, in 2012 she signed with Jay-Z’s management group Roc Nation.  Lately she has been showing her talents as a painter (she released a book of her work called M.I.A. in 2012) as well as directing videos for other artists such as Elastica and Rye Rye as well as some of her own.

She has a new album called Matangi released in 2013.  The first single from the album, “Bad Girls”, was released around two years before Matangi finally came out. The album was released on her own label, N.E.E.T. Recordings, and she has called it an anthology of all her work to date.

Definitely not a wilting flower, she has never been one to back down from what she believes in. Never afraid to offend, M.I.A. states exactly how she feels in her music or in interviews.
