appetite for democracyIt seems like the music of hard rock band Guns ‘n Roses and Las Vegas were meant for each other. The city known as Sin City is a perfect fit for a band fronted by the colourful Axl Rose. Agreeing with that thought the band took up residency in November of 2012 in the Hard Rock Casino for a series of shows. They were there to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their seminal album, Appetite for Destruction and the 4th anniversary of their latest, Chinese Democracy. It was bound to be a party.

Though the current line-up (Axl Rose – lead vocals, DJ Ashba – guitar, Dizzy Reed – keyboards, Tommy Stinson – bass, Richard Fortus – guitar, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal – guitar, Chris Pitman – keyboards, Frank Ferrer – drums) is very different from that which existed when Appetite for Destruction the new members fill in well playing those iconic hits. Great frontman and original member Axl Rose is in fine form. Everything about the production screams over-the-top and Vegas. They bring a whole new meaning to Desert Storm.

The band goes through all the songs you would hope and expect them to.  “Welcome to the Jungle”, “Sweet Child ‘O Mine”, “November Rain”, “Live and Let Die”, “Patience”, “Used to Love Her”, “Don’t Cry”, “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” and “Paradise City” are all part of the set list. There are also some surprises like covers of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2” and The Who’s “The Seeker”.  Speaking of the set list it is extensive, so much so that the concert film clocks in at just under three hours.
