At only twenty-two years of age Tyler Okonma has already earned the respect of many within the hip hop community. As the frontman of the band Odd Future and his own solo career, this being his third solo disc, he has in a very interesting way allowed the listener access to the inner workings of the teenage male’s heart and mind. He has an attitude of a guy who won’t play by the rules and really doesn’t care what most people think. Pretty self-assured for such a young guy. Like him or not you have to admire his chutzpah.
He is incredibly blunt and honest. I admire him for that. Saying what is on your mind does have its merits no matter the content. For instance, the whole part about him not really being happy about the fame game. There are precious few hip hop artists who don’t lap up fame and all the women and bling that comes along with it.
What has caused some controversy about his music is his use of homophobic slurs, overuse of violence and misogyny within his lyrics. He claims to be neither a homophobe or misogynist rather he uses words to shock and make people sit up and take notice.
