Fantasia Film Festival Comes of Age

DSC_0255.JPGThis year we will be wishing Fantasia Film Festival a happy 18th birthday.  An important birthday for any festival as it means it is now an adult.  The birthday celebration is going to last an incredible 3 weeks.  For 21 days from July 17 until August 6, 2014 you will be able to take in some of the best genre movies the film industries from around the world has to offer.

Fantasia is huge.  With over 160 feature films and 300 odd shorts there is plenty jam packed into the three weeks of the festival.  Many of these films will be screened for the first time on this continent or even the world.  There are some well-known filmmakers and their new films like Abel Ferrera, Terry Gilliam, John McNaughton, Richard Linklater, Eli Roth, and Kiyoshi Kurosawa.  Some of the more anticipated films include The Devil’s Door by Nicholas McCarthy starring Naya Rivera and Catalina Sandino Moreno, Boyhood directed by Richard Linklater starrying Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke, Cold in July directed by Jim Mickle starring Michael C. Hall and Sam Shepard, Creep directed by Patrick Brice starring Mark Duplass, and Faults directed by Riley Stearns starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Other well-known actors starring in films screened include Don Johnson, René Angélil, Charlie Chaplin, Michael Fassbender, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Chow Yun-Fat, and Sky Ferreira.  The films are divided into several categories like the return of Axis, Fantasia’s animation showcase, Documentaries From the Edge, Action,Paradigm Shifters, The Best Years of My Life?, Genres du Pays, and Celluloid Soul.

What is no different about the festival this year is that it will host some of the best and most brilliant genre filmmakers in the world to present their latest works right here in Montreal.  More than 76 directors, producers and actors are coming to Fantasia giving the cinephiles a chance to interact with them.  They will come from all over the world from countries like Japan, South Korea, France, Brunei, and the Netherlands.  Expect to rub elbows with the likes of director Mamoru Oshii, who will be receiving a Fantasia Lifetime Achievement Award for his incredible career in animation, director Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel), director John McNaughton (Wild Things, Henry: A Portrait of a Serial Killer), actress Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation, Safety Not Guaranteed), actor Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds, (500) Days of Summer), director/writer Jeff Baena (I Heart Huckabees), actor Ray Wise (Twin Peaks, Robocop), Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), who will receive a Fantasia Lifetime Achievement Award, and director Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, King of New York)

Besides the films there are plenty of other things to do.  Fantasia is hosting panels and special events like Kid Power! Book Launch, Roadkill Superstar discussion, Dirty Movies: A History of the Stag Film, Genre Series: Web and Televsion, You’re Not Dead Until You’re Forgotten: Special Book Launch Event and film screening.

The 3rd edition of the Fantasia industry Rendez-Vous is happening from July 24-27.  Members of the international film industry will gather to develop film projects and some selling and buying of films from Fantasia’s programming will also happen.  It is big bringing together 280 participants with 26 distribution companies including The Weinstein Company, eOne, Magnolia, and Mongrel and 27 festival programmers including Toronto, Sundance and Tribeca.  In total 24 film projects that are in development will be introduced during a series of conferences.
