With the release of the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film and the natural subsequent back in the spotlight about the franchise there have been a whole series of DVD releases. This one is a documentary about how the Turtles came to be and the men behind them. Even though I have not really watched much Turtle stuff nor am I very knowledgeable about them or their trajectory I found this documentary interesting, entertaining and illuminating.
The Turtle story starts in the spring of 1984 when the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic came out. The Turtles stood out from day one. First, it was bigger in dimension than your typical comic book so it didn’t fit on the rack and as a result had to be placed somewhere different. Second, the type of superheroes in this comic were different than what anyone had seen before. Lastly, that title! It really stuck with you. co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael. They were totally not like any other superhero or comic book characters. People loved it and the first issue sold out.
Evolution happened due to the popularity and the heroes with shells changed from that original black and white comic to colour then on to a television series, toys and feature length films. We hear all the permeations, situations and occurrences during the early years that turned them into the lovable characters that millions of kids and adults have love for decades now. Dial forward thirty years and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are still around and still able to carry a film.
Through interviews with those involved in the creation and early years we gain a good picture of what things were like and how the Turtles became what they are.
