2014 has been the coming out party for singer Banks. Born in California in 1988 Jillian Rose Banks just uses her family name on stage. This year she has been nominated for the BBC’s prestigious Sound of 2014 award and MTV’s Brand New Nominee as well as being FoxWeekly’s Artist to Watch in May.
A child of divorce, Banks began teaching herself piano and writing songs to help her cope with her parents’ divorce at the age of 15. Before being signed to a record deal she put her music out on SoundCloud. Being friends with actress and daughter of Phil Collins, Lily Collins, didn’t hurt either as she used her contacts to get Banks’ music out there. Shortly after being signed to Good Years Recording she put out an EP called Fall Over in 2013. Then after moving over to Harvest Records she put out a second EP called London. Both garnered good reviews from critics. London really made her an artist that you had to hear. Then she released her first full length album, Goddess, just at the beginning of September. Her sound has been described as dark R&B and she has said that Fiona Apple and Lauryn Hill are her biggest influences.
In the fall of 2013 she was the opening act on The Weeknd’s tour, in the spring of 2014 she began a tour of her own and then played Coachella and Bonnaroo this past summer.
