Singer Dan Smith began in 2010 performing under the name Bastille in his native England. He selected the name because his birthday, July 14, falls on Bastille Day. Deciding it would be more fun having people alongside him on stage, Dan Smith (vocals/keyboards/percussion) was joined by Chris Wood (drums), Kyle Simmons (keyboards/bass/percussion) and William Farquarson (bass/guitar/keyboards).
The band’s EP Laura Palmer gained them some notice amongst British music fans. After signing with the label Virgin Records the quartet released its first single, “Overjoyed”, in 2012. In March 2013 they released their first album entitled Bad Blood. It debuted at the top of the British charts and has sold over 2 million copies in the UK alone. Afterwards came four Brit Award nominations in 2014 and they won one for British Breakthrough Act.
Dan Smith has said that the band has the material it needs to record their sophomore album, but due to their touring schedule have not had the time to go into the studio to record it yet. In the meantime catch them live at the Bell Centre.
