Hummingbirds are tiny yet strong. Earth’s tiniest warm blooded mammals. These birds capture the attention of humans due to their quickness and seemingly endless amount of energy. On top of that they have flying abilities no other bird has. Their wings can beat at up to two hundred times per second. All this dynamism is at the cost of a supercharged metabolism that leaves them in a perilous physical situation at all times. They have to consume half their body weight daily and even if they do so they risk starvation overnight. In modern days biologist have been able to study their incredible physical make-up. Their daily lives are gone over in detail such as nectar gathering, mating rituals and predatory behaviour.
Put together a fast-paced tempo to replicate the birds themselves by the brilliant people at PBS and narrated by F. Abraham Murray. You will learn plenty of things about these marvelous birds that you never knew before. Leaves us to decide whether hummingbirds are the product of adaptation or evolution. The cinematography is crystal clear as a new type of camera was used that captures an amazing five hundred frames per second. Allows you to not only see them hover and fly backwards but also the acrobatics they perform in the air.
