Despite the fact that she has only had a short career so far with one mixtape released and one song (“212”) that most would recognize American rapper Azealia Banks has garnered plenty of press and interest. Most of that is due to her fight with her former label Universal Music Group and her outspoken nature. Now that she has released her debut label album I needed to know if she was more than her upfront and unflinching lyrics and her wars with Perez Hilton, rapper Angel Haze and Iggy Azalea. Her music reflects youth today in that it is a combination of a lot of things. You get jazz, hip hop, house and garage all compiled into an EDM package. In other words, this is a package that will appeal to the kids that spend time at dance clubs. Strong tracks include “Wallace”, “JFK” and “Chasing Time”, the latter being the first single off the release. There really are no weak songs and while it is not perfect even the flaws make the album of more interest. Make sure you listen to this on headphones as there are lots of little moments you will miss on speakers. She obviously pays attention to and thinks of the details. The young lady bows to no one and walks her own musical path. She is one of those rare musicians who aims for originality. The music is catchy and the lyrics are as controversial as you would expect.
