With the recent Book of Mormon and the upcoming Jersey Boys Montreal has been blessed with a couple of Tony Award winning musicals taking the stage here over the span of a couple of months. High profile English theatre is a rarity here and Jersey Boys starts the year off on a high note.
Jersey Boys has won Tony Awards, Grammy Awards as well Olivier Awards, so it is coming to town highly recommended. Its run has lasted five The musical tells the tale of a musical group from New Jersey. No, not Bon Jovi rather Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Starting from humble beginnings, they went on to become one of the biggest acts in pop music at the time. The time was the 1960s and they were four blue collar boys from Jersey. With Frankie Valli’s falsetto leading the vocal group they went on to record a string of hits like “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You”, “December 1963 (Oh, What a Nigh)t”, “Sherry”, and “Big Girls Don’t Cry”. Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito, and Nick Massi topped the charts during that decade and made female music fans scream in delight. They had a sound no one had ever heard before and featured great harmonies. On stage they were a huge success, off stage was a different story. The musical covers the formation, success and eventual break-up of the band.
The book for the show was written by the duo of Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice with the music written by original group member Bob Gaudio with lyrics by Bob Crewe. It is directed by Canadian Des McAnuff and the choreography is by another Canadian, Sergio Trujillo.
