After spending the summer in happy coupledom with Damon (played by Ian Somerhalder), Elena (played by Nina Dobrev) is off to college and looking forward to the new challenge and people. Even though she is away from home the dark returns to her life and familiar faces reappear in her life. Soon she and Damon are fighting, the brothers are fighting and students start dying. Where there are witches, werewolves and vampire you never get a restful moment.
Episode 1: I Know What You Did Last Summer: Elena is leaving for college along with her roommate, Caroline (played by Candice Accola). Silas (played by Paul Wesley) makes an appearance.
Episode 2: True Lies: Schoolmate Jesse (played by Kendrick Sampson) gives Elena some news about Professor Maxfield (played by Rick Cosnett). Damon needs some help to try and find Stefan (played by Paul Wesley).
Episode 3: Original Sin: Elena and Katherine (played by Nina Dobrev) both dream that Stefan is in trouble. Both convince Damon to help them try and find him.
Episode 4: For Whom the Bell Tolls: Caroline tries to get to know Jesse better. Damon and Elena try to help Stefan through a tough time.
Episode 5: Monster’s Ball: Elena is affected by a student named Aaron (played by Shaun Sipos). Damon makes a deal with Silas.
Episode 6: Handle With Care: Katherine experiences the consequences of becoming human again. Damon is surprised what he learns when he figures out Tessa’s (played by Janina Gavankar) plan.
Episode 7: Death and the Maiden: Professor Maxfield gives Katherine some upsetting news. Silas does not keep his promise.
Episode 8: Dead Man on Campus: Elena and Caroline decide it is time to throw their first party on campus. Caroline becomes more worried about Jesse.
Episode 9: The Cell: Professor Maxfield traps Damon. Elena tries to mend fences with Caroline.
Episode 10: Fifty Shades of Grayson: Realizing Elena is in danger, Damon asks Stefan for his help in trying to find her. Dr. Maxfield unleashes his secret weapon in an attempt to stop Damon.
Episode 11: 500 Years of Solitude: We flashback to Katherine’s early life in 1490. Nadia (played by Olga Fonda) helps her mother.
Episode 12: The Devil Inside: Damon attempts to reconcile with Elena. Katherine concocts a plan and it involves taking Elena’s body.
Episode 13: Total Eclipse of the Heart: Caroline manages to convince Elena and Bonnie (played by Kat Graham) to attend a ball aimed at the broken hearted. Bonnie begins to suspect that another student named Liv (played by Penelope Mitchell) is performing witchcraft.
Episode 14: No Exit: Damon’s behaviour begins to change and becomes downright dangerous. Stefan decides to track down his brother and Elena tags along.
Episode 15: Gone Girl: Stefan, Caroline and Matt (played by Zach Roerig) come up with a plan to save Elena’s life. Damon seeks revenge against Professor Maxfield.
Episode 16: While You Were Sleeping: Stefan tries to explain things to a very sick Elena. Elena’s initial thought to call Damon.
Episode 17: Rescue Me: The leader of the Travelers arrives in Mystic Falls. Bonnie has a strange confrontation with Luke (played by Chris Brochu).
Episode 18: Resident Evil: Both Stefan and Elena are having dreams about a life together. Bonnie’s Grams (played by Jasmine Guy) gives her a warning.
Episode 19: Man on Fire: Elena, Stefan and Bonnie are held hostage by Enzo (played by Michael Malarkey). Elena is obsessing about her relationship with Damon.
Episode 20: What Lies Beneath: Damon and Caroline believe that Stefan and Elena are keeping a secret from them. A dead man seeks revenge.
Episode 21: Promised Land: Stefan and Elena escape from Markos (played by Raffi Barsoumian). Liv and Luke come up with a plan to protect the doppelgangers.
Episode 22: Home: A huge explosion happens in Mystic Falls due to Damon’s plan. Almost everyone is caught up in it.
