A native of West London, Ben Howard says he was introduced to music at a young age by his mother. He fell in love with the music she listened to like Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison. The 27-year-old began writing music in his preteen years and has never stopped. With those artists as his influences it is not surprising that his sound is a variety of rootsy folk rock. After his early stuff he began a move away from traditional folk music that fans seem to appreciate to a slower more mainstream sound.
Besides his mainly acoustic sound and imaginative lyrics he is also an excellent guitar player. A player who uses alternate tuning a lot in his songs, Howard also lays his guitar flat down on his knees when playing, a style her adopted after watching folk artist John Smith.
After releasing a couple of EPs, Ben Howard exploded onto the British music scene in 2011 with his full-length debut, Every Kingdom which he followed up with I Forget Where We Were in 2014. As a result of all the critical acclaim and hype he won the 2013 Brit Awards for British Breakthrough Act and British Solo Male Artist.
