He has always been a hit or miss kind of artist that offends some while at the same time attracting millions of fans. That same kind of divided feeling is that at the heart of Kid Rock’s latest album. At the age of forty-four and ten albums into his career Kid Rock still refers back to his youth for much of the material and inspiration for his latest album, First Kiss. Besides thinking back to something that happened a long time ago for him (his first kiss) he also seems to be acknowledging that time has passed for him and he looks back rather wistfully over his life. The very next moment in his lyrics Kid Rock is showing how he is not getting any softer as he ages. He is still as controversial and rough edged as he always was. On top of all the nostalgic references there are also musical references to the past like Bob Seger and Hank Williams Jr. Lots of heartland rock and roll to be found here courtesy of songs like “Jesus and Bocephus” and “Ain’t Enough Whiskey”. He is like a throwback to another time with long hair, ripped jeans, big guitars and drums, and not a care about making top 40 songs. The fun he is having results in plenty of energy being transmitted in the songs and makes it all very contagious and catchy.
