In what has become an early spring ritual the Toronto Blue Jays will be in town this weekend for a two-game series of preseason games. This time their opponents are from the National League – the Cincinnati Reds.
Though we no longer have a Major League Baseball team in the city local baseball fans can get their fix with these two games. With April 5th being opening day for baseball the season is just about upon us, so MLB squad’s rosters are pretty much set at this point. That means that you will see both teams field competitive sides.
The Cincinnati Reds are coming off a tough 2014 season. They lost 86 games while only winning 76. Injuries depleted the line-up of their most talented players throughout the season. This season they are expecting a better record as long as the injury bug does not hit them again. Players to keep an eye on are pitchers Homer Bailey, Aroldis Chapman and Johnny Cueto, infielders Joey Votto (Ontario native) and Brandon Phillips and outfielders Marlon Byrd and Jay Bruce.
For Toronto they also had a disappointing 2014 campaign in that despite the fact that ownership spent a lot of money on free agent signings the team underachieved. Injuries were also a factor. They too expect to rebound this season. Players to keep an eye on are pitchers Mark Buehrle, R.A. Dickey, Drew Hutchison, and Brett Cecil, catcher (and Montreal native) Russell Martin, infielders Edwin Encarnacion, Maicer Izturis, Jose Reyes, and Ryan Goins and outfielder Jose Bautista.
Tickets have already sold at a brisk rate with Montreal baseball fans using these preseason games as a way to prove that Montreal should be considered a baseball city.
