josh groban stagesSongs from Broadway musicals seems totally like the next logical step for Josh Groban. The tenor has carved out a career singing pseudo-operatic songs using his strong voice. As he continues to evolve it seems natural that he would look to music from the stage as being up to the muster for him and his voice. His first introduction to the music world was him singing “All I Ask of You” from Phantom of the Opera for producer David Foster. Now he has, more than fifteen years later, recorded a whole album of songs from the Broadway stage. He has chosen to cover songs from some of the most famous musicals like Les Misérables – “Bring Him Home”, Carousel – “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, Into the Woods – “Children Will Listen” and A Chorus Line – “What I Did For Love”. If you have been a Josh Groban fan then you will just lap this up. Totally in his wheelhouse or comfort zone. Many songs will bring a chill to you they are so moving. Amazingly he even demonstrates he has the cahones to do something very few others have attempted. On the album there is a duet with Kelly Clarkson. Most have stayed away for fear of being swept up and subsumed by her incredible range and power. Josh Groban is up to the task and their take of the love duet from Phantom “All I Ask Of You” is the highlight of the album. His only misstep is his reinterpretation of the classic “Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz. I am not fond of the new arrangement. Everything else demonstrates his ability to nail a classic song.
