With his thirteenth album Snoop Dogg is using it as a platform to bring to you his Los Angeles. It is his story of the City of Angels. If we are to believe him Los Angeles is a hazy, hot, sunshine filled and sexy place to be. Maybe he was inspired by the Katy Perry track “California Gurls” that he guest rapped on several years ago as he seems to have the same idea of it as Perry’s candy coloured, fun filled partyland. It seems like the city he knows involves one party after another. Maybe if you are Snoop Dogg that is the truth. When it comes to being the backdrop for an album it does make things a whole lot of fun. Added to this mix is his use of Pharrell Williams as the producer who directs Snoop Dogg to use even more of the funky Seventies beats he has turned to in the past you. To heighten that trip into music’s past you get Stevie Wonder’s harmonica on album opener “California Roll” and the Gap Band’s Charlie Wilson’s vocal turn on amongst others, “Peaches N Cream”. The retro feel is pervasive and the tracks are silky smooth throughout. Yes, he is oftentimes silly but Snoop Dogg is never dull. After twenty plus years in the rap game Snoop Dogg (back from being Snoop Lion for a short period) knows who he is and stays in the profitable niche he has carved out for himself.
