Sometimes in the seemingly quietest parts of a country that is where the most action happens. Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd (played by Neill Rea) and Detective Constable Kristin Sims (played by Fern Sutherland) seem to have murder after murder on their hands to solve.
Shepherd is a good cop but bad at interpersonal stuff or dealing with people in any regards. When he is assigned to a murder case in Brokenwood, a small countryside town in New Zealand, he learns to love the small city. This leads to him butting heads with Detective Sims.
Episode 1: Blood and Water: Two fishermen find the body of a local farmer in the river. Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd is sent to the small countryside town of Brokenwood to investigate. He finds that the man had some secrets and that Brokenwood is not as idyllic as it seems on the surface.
Episode 2: Sour Grapes: Detective Shepherd is excited about the annual Brokenwood wine show. His excitement is quashed when the body of a judge and wine critic is found inside a wine vat. Now the murder investigation takes the front seat.
Episode 3: Playing the Lie: It is Wednesday morning and several committee members of the Brokenwood Golf Club get together to play their usual round. As they approach the first green the owner of the club approaches them in a zombie-like state. After she falls into a bunker they get to her and find she is dead. Mike and Kristin are called in to investigate this murder by poisoning.
Episode 4: Hunting the Stag: Four friends as part of a stag go on a hunting trip in the woods. Their celebration turns to tragedy when the groom never returns and his body is discovered with a bullet hole in the head. This is not your typical hunting accident as none of the other three admit to it but each has fired their gun.
