Around since 1991 this collective started off essentially as a jam band and have not changed much despite achieving great success. Each of the founding members of the band came with different influences including jazz, classical, soul, and Afrobeat. All this talent and musical backgrounds came together to form a completely new sound that is distinctly Dave Matthews Band. This variety of sound has brought them fans from all corners of the music world.
The driving force behind the band is singer/songwriter/guitarist Dave Matthews, but his truly is a band. Recently the band had to deal with the death of founding member and saxophonist LeRoi Moore. For live shows he has been replaced by Jeff Coffin of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Continuing on with the tour to support their recently released CD “Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King” they figured that was what their deceased bandmate would have wanted.
The band gained quite a following initially through their annual summer cross-country tours. At their shows improvisation is their trademark. They tend to play long versions of their songs that have an unrehearsed tone to them. This is usually accompanied by a great video and light show.
