When is Hollywood gonna end this attempt to translate success in the video game arena to a good product onscreen? Let me know so I can start taking these films seriously again. Yes, they have mastered the action aspect of the film, but, oy, the stories are painful. It has gotten so bad that even the directors, in this case Frenchman Xavier Gens, seem to have no pretenses about making the story strong or even make sense in certain circumstances. It is totally an afterthought for them. Couldn’t they invest as much money in the story that they do in the way the film looks and special effects?
Agent 47 (Timothy Olyphant) works for a mysterious group called The Organization as a gun for hire. The hitman has been genetically modified so he is not your typical human. A political conspiracy is in the air and this sends Agent 47 traipsing all over the world while being chased by Interpol and the Russian military. While doing this Agent 47 comes in contact with a Russian prostitute named Nika (Olga Kurylenko), who awakens emotions in him that he has never felt before and does not really know how to deal with. This is not going to be your typical job for him.
On one hand if you enjoy playing the video game you are more than likely going to like the film because from what I am told by someone in the know it is a rather faithful adaptation. On the other if you are any sort of discerning film fan then this is gotta be stored under the if I have nothing else to watch category. There are certain times where you want to watch a film in which you can turn your brain off and just enjoy the gunfights and hand to hand combat. Despite the fact that the acting is not great it is an easy to follow story and most of the action sequences are rather cool. After the first fifteen minutes the story really starts going and does not really stop until the end.
