This young hip hop artist has the goods to back up the image. Born 30 years ago in Fayetteville, North Carolina he burst onto the scene in 2007 with his mixtape The Come Up. It made such an impression none other than Jay Z contacted J Cole (real name is Jermaine Lamarr Cole) him and after some business was worked out signed him to his label, Roc Nation, in 2009.
After the release of his debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, in 2011 the hip hop world knew of J. Cole and his talent. The album went number one on the Rap, R&B and Album charts and he earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. One year later, he showed no signs of slowing down as his sophomore album, Born Sinner, also went to number one on the Billboard 200.They say that bad things come in threes, well, the opposite is true for J. Cole. His third album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, which was released in 2014 also went to the top of the chart.
Rapping since he was 14-years-old, J. Cole’s ability with word play and rhyming is great. He says he is most inspired by Eminem and Canibus. His songs tell the listener a story and it is easy to get caught up in them.
