Belgian singer-songwriter Stromae has hit the big times in Montreal. Besides the fact that he sings in French his preferred musical genres – hip hop/electronica – are popular here. As a result he is playing a couple of near sold out shows as part of the Francofolies at the Bell Centre.
After studying music from the high school level, he began his music career in 2000 as a rapper. Paul Van Haver changed his name to Stromae (a variation of the word “maestro”) to perform under. In 2007 Stromae dropped out of film studies at school in order to concentrate fully on his music career. That year he released his debut EP and as they say everything else is history. He truly came to music fans’ awareness with his hit single “Alors on Danse” which went to number one in a couple of European countries.
Now his second album is out called Racine Caree with its first single “Papaoutai”. The album hit the top of the charts in France and Belgium.
