It is a rare treat to see a music legend perform live. Over the past couple of years we have had Barbra Streisand, Madonna and BB King (before his death) afford fans the opportunity to see and hear them live. A couple of years back during the Jazz Festival Stevie Wonder did one of those free outdoor shows. Now he is back playing a more intimate (weird to use that about the Bell Centre, but more intimate than an outdoor show with around 100,000 people) show at the Bell Centre.
Not only is it Stevie Wonder also he will be performing his classic album Songs From the Key of Life front to back in celebration of its 39th anniversary. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Album in 1976. It contains such fantastic tracks as “Isn’t She Lovely”, “Sir Duke” and “I Wish”. For music fans in their 50s and 60s this album will be part of the soundtrack of their lives.
Like the Madonna tour, fans in Montreal are blessed because Stevie Wonder has decided to start his tour right here. Since the age of 12-years-old Stevie has been called a musical genius. Despite the fact that he went blind as an infant, Stevie Wonder gravitated towards music learning how to play harmonica, drums and piano at a young age.
His career can be divided into sections with the 70s being labeled the classic period, 80s being the commercial time and the 90s on being late career. During the 70s is when Songs From the Key of Life was released. It was a double album with extra songs on an EP. Ambitious, sprawling and unlimited are some of the words used to describe the music found on it. Very quickly it was named as one of the more accomplished albums in pop music history. It is ranked at number 57 of Rolling Stone’s Top 200 Albums.
