Fans of Thomas & Friends will recognize some familiar themes in this feature length film that have cropped up before. So really no surprises here.
Thomas & Friends has been a winner with young boys and by extension their parents for several generations. This latest is one of the better ones. They are very good with giving the many engines and other rail cars onscreen time. Everyone’s favourite gets a chance at their time in the sunshine. Each behaves as you would expect them to. Plus we are introduced to some new trains or characters. Makes for a lot but the way it is presented makes things digestible. Even for the young fans. On top of that you get some really quality actors like Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne and Oscar nominee John Hurt providing some of the voices. The animation, which was done in Toronto, is what you’ve come to expect with the scenes of vistas and sunrises verging on superior. Last but not least the music is fun and easy to sing along with.
After a pirate ship is unearthed, Thomas (voiced by Thomas May) and his train friends begin a hunt for the island of Sodor’s lost treasure. Thomas and some new friends go further than what they should and now trouble is right around the next bend. So it is up to Thomas to find the treasure first in a part of Sodor he is unfamiliar with before Sailor John (voiced by John Hurt) gets his hands on it.
