It is quickly becoming a golden age in Canadian music internationally. Between Justin Bieber, Michael Buble, Carly Rae Jepsen, Drake, The Weeknd and Shawn Mendes this northern country is announcing its intentions upon the top of the music charts. Looking to join this group is young female singer, Alessia Cara. The nineteen-year-old is not your typical pop star and her music isn’t what you would usually find on the charts. It starts with her voice which will remind many of Any Winehouse with all its jazzy tones. On songs like “Four Pink Walls” and “Outlaws” this is demonstrated in spades. She is a different kind of young singer, who wants different things. On the lead single from her debut album “Here” the overriding feeling is a negative one from a girl who is not looking to spend her time partying. Moodiness overshadows many of the tracks on Know-It-All. Even the romantic ones like “River of Tears”. I guess, we should not expect something other than angst on an album from a teenager. Of all the modern day pop stars Alessia Cara is most like Lorde, in her attention to musicality, not looking to be the cool one and mature lyrics. In the end despite looking for other things, both will find commercial success and be considered one of the cool kids.
