At the age of eighty-three most humans are slowing down, kicking their feet up and enjoying their last few years. Not country music legend Loretta Lynn. She has just released her first album in over a decade. The music on the album is largely made up of different recording sessions she did with Johnny Cash and June Carter’s son, John Carter Cash. It is all straight forward old school country music made up of a few new songs mixed in with traditional numbers. Well-worn songs like “Always On My Mind” and “Band of Gold” are given a different twist in this master’s hands. Speaking of her hands Lynn’s work on her acoustic and steel guitars is great. Additional treats come in the form of two duets – one being “Lay Me Down” with Willie Nelson and nice harmonies with Elvis Costello on “Everything It Takes “. The Willie Nelson duet is great as it is two long time country singers looking back at the lives they have lived in a very nostalgic way. The center point of the album is Loretta Lynn’s voice. It is as great as ever showing no signs of age. She has always been able to sing in a way that makes everything feel heartfelt and intimate. Loretta Lynn has always been a great song writer and it continues here giving the listener an insight into her heart and mind. Great to have some new material from the Queen of Country.
